Lakhs bid adieu to Vajpayee on final journey


New Delhi: Lakhs of mourners were by the side of late former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s cortege from the BJP’s headquarters for Rashtriya Smriti Sthal for the last rites of the poet-politician.

People from across the country gathered outside the BJP headquarters and hundreds lined up inside to pay tribute to the three time prime minister.

Many more jostled and some clambered on trees to capture the moment on their mobile phones when he was carried in a flower decked gun carriage through the streets of Delhi towards his final resting place.

Earlier in the day, the mortal remains of Vajpayee were taken to BJP headquarters from his residence on the 6A Krishna Menon Marg in the national capital.

Amid chants of ‘Atal Bihari Amar Rahe’, Vajpayee’s mortal remains of Vajpayee, who passed away last evening, reached the BJP headquarters on Pt Deen Dayal Updadhyay Marg around 11:15 am.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, party chief Amit Shah and several union ministers paid their last respects to Atal Bihari Vajpayee both at his house and the party headquarters.

While flower petals were showered by thousands of people en-route the Rashtriya Smriti Sthal, leaders from other political parties too turned up en-masse to bid him goodbye.

Reacting to Vajpayee’s demise, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “I have no words, I am filled with emotions right now. Our respected Atal ji is no more. Every moment of his life he had dedicated to the nation.”

The top Congress leadership condoled the demise of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee today with party chief Rahul Gandhi saying India had lost a great son who will be missed.

It is learnt that Vajpayee’s son-in-law Ranjan Bhattacharya would perform the last rites.

Vajpayee,93, passed away at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here last evening after a prolonged illness.
