Konark: The world-famous Konark Sun temple in Odisha’s Puri district has been illuminated with solar lights on Tuesday.
According to reports, the solar lights at the Sun Temple will be turned on every evening till 10 pm. A solar plant has been set up near the Konark bus stand to provide solar energy to the temple via power cables.
The Centre has launched an initiative to turn the Konark Sun temple into ‘Surya Nagri’, meaning ‘Sun Town’.
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is in charge of the entire solarization work. Also, the Indian government will pay Rs 25 crores for the completion of the project.
As per the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, the solarization scheme will include setting up a 10 MW grid-connected solar project. The scheme will also incorporate applications like solar power plants with battery storage, solar drinking water kiosks, etc.
The implementation of the scheme by the Odisha Renewable Energy Development Agency will be meeting all the solar energy requirements of the town.
