Kendrapada: A suspended police officer has been sent to jail after his bail plea was rejected by a local court in Kendrapada district in connection with the alleged custodial death of a prisoner in August last year.
The accused police officer has been identified as Shyamaghana Behera, former IIC of Mahakalpada police station in the district.
According to sources, A 25-year-old youth identified as Abinash Paital of Balana village in the district was arrested in a mobile phone theft case in August 2018.
However, he was found dead in the police custody under mysterious circumstances a day after his arrest.
Abinash was found hanging from the stairways of a house a few meters away from the police station. After Abhinash’s death, his family members have alleged that Abinash was tortured by police personnel and he had died due to depression.
However, Behera was suspended by the DGP for dereliction of duty and Crime Branch probe was ordered. He surrendered before SDJM court here and his bail petition was rejected.
