Jammu and Kashmir: In a significant move to uphold the sanctity of the revered Vaishno Devi shrine, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Katra, Piyush Dhotra, has issued a prohibition order banning the sale, possession, and consumption of liquor and non-vegetarian food within the jurisdiction of the sub-division. This order, effective for two months, aims to maintain the spiritual atmosphere for the millions of devotees visiting the shrine annually.
The ban, enacted under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), applies to Katra and its surrounding areas, including the path leading to the Vaishno Devi shrine. Key locations affected by this order include villages within a two-kilometre radius of the Katra to Holy Cave route, such as Arli, Hansali, and Matyal, as well as major roads like Katra-Tikri, Katra-Jammu, Katra-Reasi, and Panthal-Domail.
Authorities have emphasized that the prohibitions will be strictly enforced along the pilgrimage route and in designated areas, including near the Katra Railway Station. Residents and visitors are urged to comply with the restrictions to ensure a peaceful and respectful environment for pilgrims.
The order aims to preserve the spiritual values of the region by prohibiting all forms of non-vegetarian food, including eggs, chicken, meat, seafood, and other animal-based products1. The local administration has called for cooperation from the public to maintain the sanctity of the shrine and its surroundings during this period.
