Nag Ashwin directed Kalki 2898 AD, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, Prabhas and Deepika Padukone, recently completed one month at the box office.
This time, the film set many box office records, not only in India but also in North America, which is one of the biggest markets for Telugu films.
In India, the film is currently chasing Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan spot to become the fourth highest-grossing film in Indian Cinema, and in North America, it has already become the highest-grossing foreign film of the year, by minting more than US $ 18 million. But, there seems to be one record that it is now unlikely to break, and that is to become the highest-grossing Indian film in North America.
The SS Rajamouli-directed, Prabhas and Rana Daggubati starrer Baahubali 2- The Conclusion is currently holder of the top spot in the list of highest-grossing Indian films in North America. With the way Kalki 2898, AD began its journey at the box office and how it sustained in the first two weeks, one was expecting it to displace Baahubali 2 as well. But, by the end of the film entered its third and fourth week, it began to lose steam, and at the end of 33 days, the film has minted US $ 18.48 million, while Baahubali 2 is sitting at the US $ 20.77 million; the difference between the two films is more than the US $ 2 million. On the 33rd day at the ticket window, Kalki 2898 AD minted just about US $ 7500, and with this speed, it seems like it will take the second spot on the list.
Nag Ashwin’s directorial venture had beaten films like Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan and Jawan, Jr NTR and Ram Charan’s RRR and Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal to reach the second spot.
The next big challenger for Kalki 2898 AD will be Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao’s Stree 2 which is releasing on 15th August, and in North America, it is being released by the same distributor who released Kalki.
