Bhubaneswar: Justice Bela M. Trivedi, a Supreme Court judge, has been appointed as the chairperson of the Mahanadi Water Disputes Tribunal.
The position of chairperson had been vacant for seven months.
The tribunal was established in 2018 following a directive from the Supreme Court to water-sharing dispute between Chhattisgarh and Odisha.
The Ministry of Water Resources, River Development, and Ganga Rejuvenation constituted the tribunal, having its headquarters in Delhi.
Odisha government had approached the Supreme Court, requesting a referral of the water dispute concerning the inter-state river Mahanadi and its river valley for adjudication under the Inter-State River Water Disputes Act of 1956.
