Junior Women National Hockey: Four Teams Enter Semi-Finals


Kollam (Kerala): The Quarter-Finals of the Junior Women National Hockey Championship 2019 (B Division) took place here today at the Hockey Stadium, Kollam.

Hockey Bhopal, Assam Hockey, Andhra Hockey Association and Hockey Patiala won their respective matches to progress to the Semi-Finals of the competition.

In the first Quarter-Final, it was Hockey Bhopal who secured their place in the Semi-Finals as they defeated Bengaluru Hockey Association by an emphatic margin of 11-1. Hockey Bhopal started the match on the front-foot, scoring the first goal in the 5th minute, and taking a 7-0 lead after just 39 minutes to stamp their authority on the proceedings.

Bengaluru Hockey Association did pull a goal back in the 40th minute through their Captain Tanvi Jain, but Hockey Bhopal scored four more goals to advance in the competition. Goals for Hockey Bhopal were scored by Meenu Rani (12′, 60′), Vartika Rawat (26′, 39′), Lanleibi Chanu Khundrakpam (5′), Captain Kavita Bagdi (10′), Poonam Pal (15′), Pooja Nagle (37′), Shaheen Khan (42′), Lanchenbi Khundrakpam (43′) and Neha (52′).

The second Quarter-Final saw Assam Hockey produce a determined performance to defeat Kerala Hockey 2-1. The match saw both the teams play out a goal-less first quarter, but it was Assam Hockey who struck twice in the third quarter through Milka Surin (33′) and Martina Jharia (35′) to take a firm lead in the crucial encounter. Kerala Hockey tried to make a come-back in the match but could only score once in the 55th minute through Revathy I Nair, as Assam Hockey defended well to secure a 2-1 win.

In the third Quarter-Final, it was Andhra Hockey Association who came out on top as they defeated Pool B toppers Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu comfortably by a margin of 4-0. Andhra Hockey Association struck a goal each in the first two quarters to be in prime position as the goals were scored by Sandhya Balagonda (9′) and Roshitha Pulicharla (30′).

Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu could not find a way back into the match, and Sandhya Balagonda’s two more goals (47′, 49′) in the last quarter saw her complete her hat-trick of goals and secure her team’s position in the Semi-Finals with a 4-0 win.

In the fourth and last Quarter-Final of the competition, it was Hockey Patiala who remained unbeaten in the competition as they produced a stunning 5-0 victory over Sports Authority of Gujarat – Hockey Academy.

Hockey Patiala started the match brightly as they scored three goals in the opening quarter and added two more in the second quarter to take an impressive 5-0 lead after just 26 minutes. Their performance in the first two quarters was enough for them to secure the win as Sports Authority of Gujarat – Hockey Academy found it difficult to get past Hockey Patiala’s defence. Goals for Hockey Patiala were scored by Captain Navjot Kaur (10′, 26′), Sukhmander Kaur (13′, 15′) and Gurmail Kaur (19′).
