Jumbo menace triggers panic in two Odisha dists


Bolangir: The continuous venture of over 25 elephants into the Turkela area of Bolangir district has triggered panic in the nearby villages.

Sources said the huge herd of pachyderms have been straying into the nearby villages for quite some times. Locals alleged that the jumbos entered into the village area and went on a rampage in the agricultural lands destroying acres of crop and cotton plantations.

Villagers also fear a possible man-animal conflict in the area following the frequent visits by the jumbos.

On being informed, forest department officials and police reached the spot and initiated an operation to keep away the jumbos from human habitations.

In a tragic incident in Angul district, a woman, identified as Lalita Majhi of Purunagarda village, was trampled to death by a wild elephant early on today morning.

While forest department officials were yet to arrive at the spot even after hours, family members of the deceased along with locals staged road blockade on Chendipada-Bagedia road by burning tyres. The agitators demanded immediate action by the forest department to curb the jumbo menace and compensation to the kins of the deceased.
