Jayanti Patnaik, Former MP & Noted Litterateur, Passes Away At 90

Bhubaneswar: Former MP and wife of former Odisha CM, late Janaki Ballabh Patnaik, Jayanti Patnaik passed away while undergoing treatment at a private hospital here on Wednesday night. She was 90.

Born in 1932 in Ganjam’s Aska, Jayanti Patnaik was elected twice to the Lok Sabha, first in 1985 from Cuttack and again in 1998 from Berhampur. The veteran Congress leader was also elected to the Rajya Sabha two times.

It is pertinent to mention here that Patnaik was the first Chairperson of the National Commission for Women from 3rd Feb 1992 to 30th Jan 1995. She also held the post of president of the All India Mahila Congress.

Condolences poured in from various walks following the demise of Jayanti Patnaik, a dynamic politician, women’s leader and noted litterateur.

Odisha Governor Prof Ganeshi Lal has expressed deep grief over the death of former MP, a prominent politician and litterateur Jayanti Patnaik. Her contributions to the field of Odia literature and to society will be remembered forever, Lal said and prayed for the departed soul to rest in peace.

Andhra Pradesh Governor, Biswa Bhusan Harichandan also expressed deep grief over the demise of Jayanti Patnaik. “I am deeply saddened to hear the news of the demise of women’s leader and former MP Jayanti Patnaik. She was the first chairperson of the National Commission for Women and well-known as an MP for her contributions in the fields of social service and literature,” the AP Governor said in a tweet in Odia.
