The excitement settled after two days of non-stop action at the IPL 2025 Mega Auction in Jeddah on November 24 and 25.
Ten teams spent a record-breaking Rs 639.15 crore to finalize their squads for the Indian Premier League 2025 season.
Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer were the biggest purchases on day one, while seasoned bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar was the top pick on day two. The Punjab Kings made headlines by signing three marquee players as they assembled their team from the ground up.
The Lucknow Super Giants made Rishabh the most expensive player in the tournament’s history by spending Rs 27 crore, just 25 lakh more than the Punjab Kings paid for Shreyas. The Kolkata Knight Riders then surprised fans by spending Rs 23.75 crore to re-sign batting all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer.
Following this trio, Arshdeep Singh and Yuzvendra Chahal, India’s top two all-time leading wicket-takers in T20Is, were snapped up by the Punjab Kings. England’s white-ball captain Jos Buttler joined GT for Rs 15.75 crore, while the Delhi Capitals invested Rs 14 crore in potential captain KL Rahul.
The five-time champions Chennai Super Kings grabbed headlines by re-signing local hero Ravichandran Ashwin and also repurchasing their former players to rebuild the core for the 2025 season.
Fan favourites Royal Challengers Bangalore emerged as the most successful team, spending judiciously to finalize their squad. RCB managed to sign world no.2 T20I batter Phil Salt for just Rs 11.50 crore, while star Australian pacer Josh Hazlewood was brought in for Rs 12.5 crore.
RCB showed their intent to bolster the bowling lineup by acquiring two-time Purple Cap winner Bhuvneshwar Kumar for Rs 10.75 crore, outbidding MI and LSG. They also focused on their batting lineup by signing Jacob Bethell, Liam Livingstone, and Tim David, and welcoming back local favourite Devdutt Padikkal.
The Mumbai Indians had a satisfactory outcome over the two days of the auction, despite a limited budget. They secured Trent Boult as their priciest acquisition for Rs 12.50 crore and also invested heavily in bringing on board Deepak Chahar. However, it should be noted that the actual amount spent on Deepak Chahar was Rs 9.25 crore.
