Ranchi: As bad light played spoilsport in the 3rd session, India declared for 497/9 after stunning knocks from Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane against South Africa at the JSCA Stadium Complex in Ranchi on Sunday.
Rohit Sharma scored 212 and put up a 267-run stand with Ajinkya Rahane.Rahane was dismissed for 115. Following this, Ravindra Jadeja added 51 to India’s tally and Umesh Yadav added the final flourish for India with an entertaining 10-ball 31.
India’s push for a big score was fueled by Ravindra Jadeja, who walked in at No. 6 for the 2nd successive time in the ongoing series. Jadeja took his time to settle down but chipped in with a crucial half-century.
The latter half of the day though belonged to Umesh Yadav. The India pacer, who has a first-class hundred against his name, delighted the Ranchi crowd with a memorable cameo. He smashed George Linde for 5 sixes and finished with 31 runs from just 10 balls. Umesh perished while trying to go for his 6th six in the lead up to tea.
South Africa trail India’s 1st innings score by 488 runs on a track where Indian bowling attack is looking more spiteful than their South African counterparts.
South Africa were reeling at 9 for 2 after Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Shami removed their openers Quinton de Kock and Dean Elgar with fiery bouncers in the post Tea session. In the following over, Umesh got the newly-promoted South Africa opener Quinton de Kock for 4 with another unplayable bouncer.
Bad light stopped play after just 5 overs of action in the South African innings. The play was subsequently called off as it didn’t seem light would improve after the interruption. In an early breakthrough, South Africa lost Dean Elgar for 0 in the very 2nd ball of their innings by Mohammed Shami.
With light fading, India were forced to bring on their spinners. Interestingly, Virat Kohli chose to throw the red cherry to debutant Shahbaz Nadeem and Ravindra Jadeja ahead of off-spinner R Ashwin.
