Washington: During their annual conference, the International Cricket Council (ICC) established a three-member committee to investigate the unsatisfactory management of the T20 World Cup 2024’s USA leg.
“The ICC Board has confirmed a review of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 delivery. Overseen by three directors—Roger Twose, Lawson Naidoo, and Imran Khawaja—the committee will report their findings to the Board later this year,” stated the ICC in a press release.
The ICC has issued a formal notice to USA Cricket and Cricket Chile. Non-compliance could lead to USA Cricket’s suspension.
“USA Cricket and Cricket Chile have been officially notified and given 12 months to address their non-compliance with the ICC Membership Criteria. Both members lack a fit-for-purpose governance and administrative structure,” the ICC announced.
The ICC Americas office will assist Cricket Chile in addressing their non-compliance. The Board decided to establish a Normalisation Committee, consisting of Board and Management representatives, to supervise and monitor USA Cricket’s compliance roadmap. The ICC Board retains the right to suspend or expel the member for ongoing non-compliance.
USA Cricket has one year to organize its affairs. Despite reports of USA Cricket exceeding its budget for hosting the T20 World Cup 2024, the ICC has indicated that there will be a comprehensive review. USA Cricket has faced turmoil in recent years, with the termination of four CEOs.
This month, two ICC officials, Claire Furlong and Chris Tetley, who played direct roles in the T20 World Cup’s American operations, resigned. It is understood that these resignations were submitted months prior, but they remained until the T20 World Cup 2024. They both participated in the ICC meeting in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
Despite several problems, while hosting the league stage of the T20 World Cup, the USA on their debut in the tournament beat Pakistan to create history. They qualified for the Super 8 stage as well.
