‘Hong Kong to become new Tibet soon after new security law’

New Delhi: The Tibetan government in exile lashed out at China saying Hong Kong is heading towards the same fate as Tibet after China’s new security law.

President of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), Lobsang Sangay, accused China of cheating Hong Kong the way it cheated the Tibetan people in 1951.

Lobsang said the Chinese undermined the freedom of the Himalayan kingdom by its oppressive rule. He said it is being replicated in Hong Kong.

Tibet was promised “one country, two systems” but all the provisions of the 17-point agreement were violated by the Chinese later, he added.

Sangay said that similar security laws were imposed on Tibet to crush independent voices which led to the 1959 Tibetan uprising against the Chinese rule after which The Dalai Lama fled to India.
