Hirakud Dam Reservoir to release first floodwater today


Sambalpur: With the gradual increase of water level of Hirakud Dam Reservoir (HDR) following incessant rain, Hirakud dam authorities will release the first floodwater of the season at 11 am today.

The water level of the reservoir is 618.21 feet while the total capacity of the reservoir is 630 feet.  Water inflow into the dam is 1,40,784 cubic ft/sec while the outflow is 16,844 cubic ft/sec.

Superintending Engineer, Hirakud Dam Circle, Bhakta Ranjan Mohanty said the water level of the HDR is gradually increasing due to good rainfall on the upstream of the dam.

The dam authorities have also alerted all the departments concerned besides the district administration of Sambalpur, Bargarh, Sonepur, Angul, Boudh, Nayagarh, Cuttack, Phulbani, Khurda, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur and Puri to take necessary safety measures to see that the river bed of Mahanadi, downstream of Hirakud dam, is cleared off any temporary construction or encroachment.

On the other hand, discharge of water from the Hirakud dam will eventually lead to an increase in water level in the lower basin of Mahanadi River as the water will reach Munduli.

The level at Patharla started falling at 8.60lakh cusec. Similarly, the level at Khairmal also falling at 10.86 lakh Cusec. Expected flood discharge at Munduli to be about 10.5 to 11.0 lakh cusec.
