GPTA caught taking bribe in Kalahandi’s Lanjigarh

Lanjigarh: Vigilance sleuths on Friday caught red-handed the Gram Panchayat Technical Assistant (GPTA) of Lanjigarh block, Subrat Kumar Mallik, while accepting Rs 33000 as bribe from a contractor.

The vigilance officials of the Koraput division, on the basis of the complaint of Gautam Nag, laid a trap and arrested Mallik while he was accepting the gratification.

Reports said on the recommendations of Kumkhal panchayat PEO Senapati Mangaraj, Nag had taken up the assignment for de-silting two ponds in Surishpadar village at a cost of Rs 2 lakh.

It is alleged that Mallik at the end of de-silting told Nag that he could sanction the bill amounting to Rs 1.5 lakh and not Rs 2 lakh as promised. The GPTA even demanded Rs 33,000 as bribe to pass the bill.

Despite repeated requests by Nag that due to his penury he could not pay the demanded amount, Mallik did not listen to him and remained adamant over his demand for illegal gratification.

The accused junior engineer was in charge of Kumkhal and Pokaribandh panchayats.
