Gold seized again at BPIA in Bhubaneswar, one detained


Bhubaneswar: It seems gold smugglers have made Odisha their new destination. It is for the fourth time in this week gold has been seized at Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) worth over Rs 5 lakh here today.

The gold was seized from a passenger of the Bangkok-Bhubaneswar Air India flight AI 339 that landed at Bhubaneswar airport this morning.

The Customs department is interrogating the person, identified as a businessman, detaining at the airport.

Yesterday 300 gm gold worth around Rs 9.53 lakh was seized from a person who landed here from Bangkok on March 31.

Similarly, 15 gold bars weighing 1143.78 grams worth Rs 34,90,816 were seized from two passengers of Indian origin hailing from Punjab on March 29.

Besides, three gold bars and 143 gold rings worth over Rs 12 lakh were recovered from two passengers hailing from Thane, Maharashtra on March 28.
