Goat deaths trigger panic among villagers in Puri

Puri: Mysterious deaths of more than 50 goats in the last couple of days at Samajajpur village in Puri district has triggered panic among the residents. The animals were reportedly suffering from an unknown disease.

The locals suspect the disease might have spread among the animals due to waterlogging in the village triggered by heavy rain a few days back, said a source.

Initially, the villagers had alerted the matter to the district veterinary, who administered injection to the infected goats. However, the goats succumbed to the unknown disease.

Social activist Nishikant Mishra said, “The local administration has failed to identify the disease. They are only administering an injection, which has only forced the villagers to take help of occultist.”

When asked chief district veterinary officer of Puri, Girija Patnaik said: “it is not a case of mass death of goats. The vets claimed that the disease might be a viral one.”

He further said, “We will vaccinate the goats who are suffering from the disease, quite similar to that of Jaundice, which is viral. As per the report we have received, there are sporadic death cases.”

Since goats are the carriers of the villagers, the district administration and veterinary officials are trying to find out the actual reason behind the death of goats.
