Berhampur: A man set her niece on fire in an inebriated condition at Bidya Nagar under Baidyanathpur police limits in Ganjam district on Monday night.
Reportedly, the accused identified as Sipran Digal had returned home drunk last night. His sister was sitting outside the house while her daughter Gayatri was sleeping inside.
Digal took the kerosene kept in the house, poured it on Gayatri, and set her on fire. Hearing her screams, Gayatri’s mother and neighbours rescued her and detained Digal. He was later handed over to the police.
Gayatri was first rushed to the nearby hospital and later shifted to SCB Medical College & Hospital in Cuttack. She has reportedly sustained 70% burn injuries.
