Paralakhemundi: The farmers of Munisingh and Sukei villages in Gumma block of Odisha’s Gajapati district are flourishing by cultivating rubber plants.
The Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA) has taken up rubber plantation on 15 ha of land in 1999 in the first phase. Nearly 6400 rubber saplings were planted. By now, rubber plantations have been taken up in 106 ha of land.
Hundreds of farmers of the above-mentioned villages have taken up rubber plantation as it is economically viable. The topography of the region is best suited for rubber cultivation. Therefore, the villagers have formed a committee to deal with the companies that are interested to buy their produce.
The IADA project officials said the economic backbone of the region has become strengthened after taking up rubber cultivation on a mass scale.
The district administration has also come forward to provide financial support to the farmers who have taken up rubber cultivation in the region. The officials said their motto is to identify farmers who are interested in cultivation which is lucrative.
As a number of families have benefited from the rubber plantation, the district administration has decided to pursue this as a self-reliant measure to boost their economic wellbeing.
