Gaja toll rises to 45 in Tamil Nadu

Chennai:Forty five people have died so far due to the severe cyclone Gaja that ravaged  a number of coastal regions in Tamil Nadu, even as the opposition has alleged poor relief work.

The Chief Minister K. Palaniswami said on Sunday that 117,624 houses have been damaged and his government is providing all necessary assistance to the victims.

The Opposition has lambasted the government of not reaching out to people. They alleged that relief materials like food, drinking water and other material have not reached the affected people. People in Pudukottai district have complained about not getting relief materials.

The Chief Minister said the central government has been requested to depute a team from the National Disaster Management to assess the destruction.

Meanwhile, DMK President M.K. Stalin, in a letter to the party cadres criticized that the Chief Minister is more interested with inaugurating projects rather than visiting the cyclone battered areas.

Stalin said coconut trees in about 7,000 hectares in several districts have been damaged.

Founder of PMK S. Ramadoss said it was a shame that the AIADMK government has failed to provide food and other materials to the affected people.
