Bhubaneswar: Four gunrunners were arrested from the city and five illegal guns were seized from them during a special drive against sale and possession of illegal arms, the Commissionerate Police (CP) said on Tuesday.
The arrested have been identified as Ramachandra Barik (30) of Anlajodi, Sanjay Kumar Jena (25) of Kuapada in Puri, Gyana Ranjan Singh alias Jilu (35), of Palaspur in Tangi, Khurda and Gouranga Charana Sitha alias Goura (35) of Tareni Nagar in Salia Sahi, Bhubaneswar.
According to the CP’s press note, accused Ramachandra and Sanjay have been arrested in connection with Khandagiri PS case no 501/29.10.18, under Section 25 (I) (B) of Arms Act. One 9mm and one 765mm pistol were seized from the duo respectively, along with five live ammunitions and one alto car.
Similarly, Gyan Ranjan was arrested in connection with Capital PS case no 454/29.10.18 under Sections 25/27 of Arms Act and one 765mm pistol with one live bullet was seized from him, the press note stated.
The fourth accused, Gouranga has been arrested in connection with Nayapalli PS case no 493/30.10.18 under Section 25/27 of Arms Act, and two numbers of revolvers with five rounds of live bullets, and one auto rickshaw was seized from him, the press note further stated.
The sources of procurement of these seized illegal fire arms have also been verified and follow up action is under progress, the police said. Other cases registered against the arrested persons are under verification and all the accused will be forwarded to court today, the police added.
It may be mentioned here that the drive was jointly conducted by the CP’s Special Squad and Khandagiri Police on October 28 (Sunday).
