Rayagada: Congress leader and former Zilla Parishad Chairman of Rayagada died after he met with a road accident on Tuesday.

The deceased has been identified as Purusottam Gamang.

Earlier, on March 12, 2017, the ZP election was held in Rayagada and Gamang was elected as the chairman. However, Gangadhar Puala from BJD who was one of the contenders for the post had challenged his election in the district court.

Taking up the case for hearing, the district court in December 2018 had annulled the election. However, Gamang later challenged the ruling and moved the Orissa HC.

Hearing the case yesterday, the Rayagada district judge court declared Gamang’s election as the chairman of Zilla Parishad null and void.

After the hearing of the case, Gamang was returning home from the court when he met with a road accident on Ramanaguda-Gunupur road and sustained severe injuries.

He was immediately shifted to Srikakulam in a critical condition where doctors declared him brought dead.
