New Delhi: Former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit was cremated with full state honours. Leaders across the parties attended her last rites on Sunday.
Dikshit, three-time Delhi chief minister and a life-long Congress leader, breathed her last at the age of 81 on Saturday afternoon at Fortis Escorts Heart Institute in the national capital.
Her mortal remains were kept at her residence in Delhi’s Nizamuddin area to enable people to pay their last respects.
The mortal remains were then taken from the AICC office to the cremation ground at Nigambodh Ghat where the veteran leader was cremated.
The veteran Congress leader was consigned to flames using the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) method which uses the natural gas instead of wood. This was done in accordance with her wishes. The Delhi government has declared a two-day state mourning.
According to reports, condolences have poured in from across the political spectrum with Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi visiting Dikshit’s home to pay their last respects.
Former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi has described Dikshit as “a beloved daughter of Congress” in his condolence tweet.
