Wellington: Five people were killed and over dozens injured in volcano eruption at New Zealand’s popular White Island tourist destination erupted on Monday.
As per Police sources, about 50 people were on the island at the time, more than 20 of whom were Australian tourists. Twenty-three people have been rescued.
All of those rescued had sustained injuries, mostly burns, police said, and seven people who were in a critical condition had been flown to hospitals in Tauranga and Auckland.
The terrifying disaster immediately raised questions of why people were allowed to visit the island some 50 kilometres off mainland New Zealand after scientists had noted an uptick in volcanic activity in recent weeks. White Island is the tip of an undersea volcano.
