Farmer suicide continues; Uproar in Assembly


Bhubaneswar: The cases of farmer suicide are growing in the state with a fresh incident reported from Boudh district today. Already, within two weeks similar incidents were seen in Ganjam, Nabarangpur, Bargarh and Balasore. The Assembly today saw uproar over the issue.

Like Wednesday, the Assembly saw BJP and Congress leaders protesting against state government’s alleged negligence towards farmer suicides. BJP legislators today demanded explanation from the BJD led government and asked the Assembly House Committee to probe into the issue. Similarly, led by leader of Opposition Narasingha Mishra, the Congress demanded the Speaker to call an all party meeting to discuss the matter urgently.

The Speaker had to initially adjourn the Assembly for one hour and later till 3 pm owing to the ruckus created by opposition parties.

Earlier, on Wednesday, Agriculture minister Pradeep Maharathy accepted that there have been 1895 farmer suicides in last 10 years.

On Thursday, a farmer from Manamunda has reportedly committed suicide over farming issues.
