Budapest: Cristiano Ronaldo became the new all-time leading scorer at the European Championships.

Ronaldo has now 11 goals in the Euros. He moved past Michel Platini with whom he was jointly holding the record before Tuesday’s encounter.

Ronaldo took his international tally to 106 goals and is now only 3 behind former Iran striker Ali Daei’s men’s record of 109 international goals.

Portugal began their title defence with a 3-0 win over Hungary in Group F opener of Euro 2020 in Budapest on Tuesday.

Ronaldo late rush of goals left the packed crowd, a first in the major tournament history since the Covid-19 pandemic, dejected as Hungary did not get the desired result after a strong show of defensive discipline till the 84th minute.

Portugal defender Raphael Guerreiro scored the opening goal for the visitors in the 84th minute through a deflection that beat Hungary goalkeeper Gulacski who was in top form in front of a loud home support. Ronaldo scored from the spot to move past Platini and then doubled his tally with a stoppage-time goal that came after a nice one-two inside the box with substitute Rafa Silva.

Ronaldo began the night with a record as he became the first man to appear in 5 European Championship finals.

The 36-year-old has now also extended his record as the only player to score in five separate Euros finals, and has also played the most games, with the match against Hungary being his 22nd since he made his debut in 2004.

Ronaldo has now scored in every single tournament he has represented Portugal in. Starting from Euro 2004, Ronaldo has continued his scoring ways in 11 tournaments with the national team.

Meanwhile, Portugal’s 3-0 win over Hungary was the joint-biggest win by the defending champions of the Euros in their first match of the tournament, equalling the Soviet Union’s 3-0 win over Denmark in 1964.
