Elephant tramples man to death in Ganjam

Ganjam: A wild elephant attacked and trampled a man to death in Digapahandi in Ganjam district. The deceased was identified as Alu Lacheya of Sanadanda Sahi in Digapahandi.

According to sources, the incident occurred late last night while the man was guarding his paddy stock near the Village Health Training Centre in Digapahandi. He mistook it as a herd of cattle and flashed torchlight to drive away the animal. However, provoked over the human interference, the pachyderm ran towards Alu and wrapped him with its trunk before tossing him in the air and trampling him.

Alu’s associate Arakhita, who fled the spot after spotting the wild animal, alerted Alu’s family member. Alu was immediately admitted to the nearby Community Health Centre where doctors declared him “dead”.

Following the death of the man, locals blocked the Chikiti-Digapahandi road demanding adequate compensation to the kin of the deceased.
