Karanjia: A herd of at least 17 wild elephants wreaked havoc villages under Sukruli block in Mayurbhanj district. The wild jumbos strayed into the village proximity and destroyed acres of paddy and vegetable cultivation.

Panic gripped the residents after the jumbo herd ventured into the village’s farmland in search of food, and damaged acres of crops and a number of thatched houses.

The villagers have alleged that despite monitoring the movement of the elephants the forest department personnel have failed to control the situation which has resulted in huge loss to many villagers.

On the other hand, the forest staff said efforts are on to drive away the herd back to Jharkhand.
