Deogarh: An elderly man was killed while a woman suffered injuries in two separate incidents of elephant attacks in Deogarh district on Monday.
In the first incident, a 65-year-old man, identified as Sania Birua of Badakudar village under Lulanga gram panchayat, was headed to his farmland this morning when a wild elephant attacked him from behind.
The pachyderm then lifted the man with his trunk and threw him far resulting in his death on the spot.
On intimation, forest department officials reached the spot and launched a probe into the incident. Meanwhile, the body was seized and sent to a local hospital for post-mortem.
In a similar incident, a 58-year-old woman sustained injuries on her waist and back after she was attacked by a wild jumbo at Sundinali village under Kantabahal gram panchayat in the district.
The victim has been identified as Sita Sahoo, wife of Basanta Sahoo.
According to sources, Sita had gone to attend nature’s call today when the incident occurred. Soon after the incident, locals rescued the woman to Deogarh district headquarters hospital. Later, she was shifted to Burla in Sambalpur.
On being informed, forest department officials reached the spot and took stock of the situation.
