Kolkata: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday conducted search operations at various locations in West Bengal’s Howrah, Sonarpur, and Hooghly, linked to an alleged financial scam at RG Kar Medical Centre and Hospital.
Earlier in August, a 31-year-old trainee doctor was savagely raped and murdered at the state-operated RG Kar Medical Centre and Hospital, inciting protests across the nation.
Sources reveal that the ED’s raids in Hooghly included a property belonging to a relative of the former principal of RG Kar Medical Centre and Hospital, Dr Sandip Ghosh.
Recently, the agency initiated legal proceedings over purported financial discrepancies at RG Kar Medical College, based on an FIR from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which implicated Dr. Ghosh in the investigation of the doctor’s murder.
The CBI’s FIR charges include criminal conspiracy, cheating, and fraud, in addition to Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, related to the financial improprieties at RG Kar Medical College. These charges constitute cognizable and non-bailable offences.
Dr Ghosh was the principal of RG Kar Medical College from February 2021 to September 2023. Despite his transfer in October 2023, he mysteriously returned to his post within a month, holding the position until the violent assault and murder of a trainee doctor.
Dr. Ghosh was apprehended by the CBI on September 2 in the corruption case and subsequently placed into the custody of the investigative agency.
