EC seeks Law Ministry’s nod to collect voters’ Aadhaar data for fair polls

New Delhi: The Election Commission(EC) has sought statutory backing to collect voters’ Aadhaar data to weed out duplication in the electoral rolls.

In a letter to the law ministry, the commission has proposed that the Representation of the People Act be amended to allow the EC to seek the Aadhaar number of new and existing voters.

In an attempt to make voters’ list error-free, in March 2015, EC had commenced a project to link Aadhaar numbers with voters’ electoral data.

An EC functionary said: “Since the SC order makes it clear that sanction of law is required to collect Aadhaar number, the commission has proposed changes in the electoral law”.
