Bhubaneswar: A six-day-old boy, who was allegedly sold by his father for Rs 10,000 in Bhubaneswar was rescued and handed over to the child welfare department on Saturday.
According to reports, the father of the baby is a drug addict and due to his dilapidated financial condition, he sold the newborn baby to a city dweller here.
“When his wife delivered the baby six days ago, he refused to accept and threatened his wife to abandon it as they have many children. The mother became helpless and the couple sold the baby to another woman for Rs 10,000,” a childline official said.
“On being informed about the incident, our team rescued the baby from Mali Sahi area. The child will be kept at an adoption centre,” the official added.
A case under the provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act has been registered with the Kharabela Nagar police station and the baby handed over to the adoption centre, the official said, adding further investigation is on.
