Puri: In the backdrop of the tragic death of a youth by glass power coated Manja (kite string) in Cuttack city recently and an injury in Pilgrim city, Puri City Police launched a special drive against sale of Chinese manja thread.
Following this, cops raided nearly 22 shops here and registered cases against 5 shopkeepers for selling the banned manja thread.
In 2016, the Orissa High Court had directed the Cuttack-Bhubaneswar police to maintain vigil on the sale and use of Chinese Manja threads and other Manja as they are dangerous to human beings, animals and birds.
Reportedly, lack of enforcement by the administration is said to have paved the way for people especially youths and children to fly kites in public places across the city flouting the restriction.
