Dreaded criminal injured in Ganjam encounter


Berhampur: A notorious criminal was critically injured in an early morning encounter that took place near a cashew orchard at Postapur in Ganjam district on Wednesday.

The criminal, Dilip Das alias Bideshi, with bullet injuries to both legs was shifted to MKCG hospital in Berhampur after preliminary treatment at Khallikote hospital.

According to sources, Bideshi hails from Narandeipur village under Banpur police limits of Khurda district. He is facing more than 20 criminal cases in Khurda, Nayagarh, Cuttack, Bhubaneswar and other police stations in the state.

Bideshi, who was on the run for a long time, was on his way to Budhamba from Khallikote on a motorcycle along with his associate Ranjan alias Bappi in the morning. Acting on the tip-off, Kodola and Khallikote police waited in a concealed position near Postapur cashew orchard. When the police team tried to intercept them, the criminals fired two bullets at the police.

The police team fired in retaliation in which Bideshi sustained injuries. The police seized a country gun, two bullets, one motorcycle, a cellphone and Rs 14,000 in cash from his possession. However, his associate managed to give the police a slip. Efforts are on to nab him, police said.
