Double murder over witchcraft suspicion rocks Mayurbhanj
Mayurbhanj: Two women were allegedly hacked to death by a man in Rairangpur’s Madhupur village under Jamda police limits in Mayurbhanj district on Sunday over witchcraft suspicion.
The accused has been identified as Shyam Baske of the same village. Reportedly, a woman, who happens to be the accused’s aunt Jaba Baske, was struck with an arrow by the latter today.
The deceased women have been identified as Karmi Murmu and Surya Hembram.
According to sources, Shyam suspected that the women were practicing witchcraft on him as a result which, he was unable to bear children. And, when his suspicion crossed the limits he decided to eliminate them.
A source said, Baske hacked the duo, who happened to be his neighbours, with an axe and after returning home, he attacked his aunt with an arrow injuring her critically.
The woman was rushed to Jamda hospital where her health condition is stated to be critical, the source added.
Soon after his killing spree, Baske surrendered before the local police. An investigation into the incident is underway, said the police.
