Bengaluru: In an exciting day of semifinal encounters here at Dolo-650 Bangalore Cup All India Hockey Tournament 2019 (Men), Indian Oil Corporation Ltd registered a high-scoring 6-1 win against hosts Hockey Karnataka while resilient Army XI beat Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd Ltd 4-0 to book a place in the Final on Sunday.
The first Semi-Final saw Armaan Qureshi set up an early lead for IOCL with a fine field goal in the 12th minute while a good defensive structure by IOCL kept Hockey Karnataka forwards from making potential circle entries. The second quarter witnessed IOCL extend their lead to 2-0 in the 21st minute when dragflicker Gurjinder Singh scored from a powerful flick beating Hockey Karnataka goalkeeper Jagdeep Dayal.
Though Harish Mutagar scored for Hockey Karnataka in the 29th minute, they were no-match to IOCL who accelerated their attack in the following quarters. In the 32nd minute Roshan Minz scored a field goal followed by star sticker Talwinder Singh stretching the lead to 4-1 in the 51st minute. Sumit Kumar took IOCL’s lead to a formidable 5-1 in the 53rd minute while Yuvraj Walmiki struck IOCL’s sixth goal in 60th minute, thus ensuring a place in the Final and in contention for the winner’s bounty of INR 4,00,000.
In the second Semi-Final, Army XI came up with a clinical performance to beat an off-colour BPCL 4-0. Army XI backed by boisterous spectators, played a disciplined defensive structure mostly resorting to full-press that made it impossible for BPCL to create scoring opportunities. They dominated ball possession to create an early setback for BPCL when Jonny Jasrotia scored from a PC in the 11th minute. Even though BPCL goalkeeper Vikas Dahiya made several saves to contain Army XI scoreline, missing several chances on goal was a big downer for BPCL.
Army XI doubled the lead in the 35th minute via Viswa Thakur’s field goal followed by a 44th minute goal by Rajnesh Salaria. Though BPCL made ambitious attempts to bounce back in the game, losing out on two PC opportunities hurt their cause further. Meanwhile, Army XI goalkeeper Akash Chikte made commendable saves to keep his team in lead. Rajant Rajput scored the fourth goal in the 49th minute after a good assist by Binay Bengra to take the their team’s final score to 4-0.
