Bhubaneswar: The BJP has unanimously selected the candidature of Suryabanshi Suraj, son of former MLA Bishnu Charan Sethi, for the by-election to Dhamnagar Assembly constituency.

The central election board of the party has approved the name of the son of the late MLA.

The BJP is the first party which declared its candidate much before the other parties. BJD is still looking for right choice who can take on Suraj in the by-election.

To build a consensus, a team of BJP leaders including State BJP president Samir Mahanty, general secretary in charge of Bhadrak district Golak Mohapatra, national general secretary in-charge of Odisha D Purendeswari and former minister Manmohan Samal had camped in the district headquarters and met district level leaders over the candidature of Suraj.

BJP has admitted that Suraj is a better candidate as he has become a familiar face among the people of his constituency since he had looked after the segment while his father was unwell. Besides, Suraj has the advantage over other candidates as he will garner the sympathy of voters.

Bypoll to the Dhamnagar assembly constituency was necessitated following the untimely death of Bishnu Sethi.

On the other hand, BJD is considering Rajendra Das’ candidature as he had lost the 2019 election to Sethi by a slender margin. There are some other names also in the probable list of the party.

Congress is yet to build a consensus among leaders on the selection of candidate.
