Devotees throng holy Ghats on Ganga Saptami
Varanasi: Devotees thronged the ghats of River Ganga in the holy city of Varanasi and took a dip on the Ganges on the occasion of ‘Ganga Saptami’ early on Saturday morning.
Ganga Saptami’ or ‘Ganga Dussehra’ is celebrated every year by performing several rites and rituals of Ganga pooja to commemorate her. It is believed that River Ganga landed on the earth on this auspicious day.
People take a holy dip in river Ganges to celebrate the festival ‘Ganga Dussehra’, which marks the descent of river Ganges on the earth.
On this day, the mother Ganga had descended on the Saptami date of the Shukla party of Vaishak month. It is believed that after being pleased with the harsh austerity of Rishi Bhagirath, Ganga descended on earth.
It is believed that the Ganges bath on the day of Ganga Saptami wipes out all sins and opens up the path for salvation.
