Bhubaneswar: The state government carried out demolition of many illegal encroachments in front of Lingaraj Temple amid tight security on Monday.

The move has been taken in order to beautify the front side of the 11th century shrine.

Sources said unauthorised structures from the entire stretch from Singhadwara to Bhajan Mandap and Sub-station will be cleared.

Notably, many government and temple lands around the shrine were encroached. Reports said local businessmen and makeshift vendors have encroached upon these lands. It has led to inconvenience and traffic bottlenecks.

Worth mentioning that the 12th century Puri Jagannath temple has recently been made free from all encroachments by demolishing all unauthorised constructions, including centuries-old mutts, within 75 metres of its boundary wall.
