Cyclone Yaas: Panic Buying Sends Prices Soaring

Cuttack/Bhubaneswar: Amid coronavirus pandemic, thousands of twin city dwellers and several other places across Odisha made a beeline for shops to stock up on vegetables and dry food keeping in view the impending Cyclone Yaas.

As Cyclone Yaas inches closer to Odisha’s coast, potato and onion prices have skyrocketed in different parts of the state including Cuttack and Bhubaneswar with people resorting to panic buying.

According to market sources, potatoes and onions were being sold at Rs 18 to Rs 20 per kg a few days back, but now their prices have shot up to Rs 25 and Rs 27 per kg, respectively.

Moreover, there are allegations that some traders have resorted to black marketing and artificially increasing the rates of essential commodities.

The mad rush led to a steep rise in prices of chura flattened rice ), potatoes and candles. Soon they vanished from the market.

traffic too was unusually high as people thronged daily markets though the government has announced that essential items will be available easily followyng relaxation of lockdown norms.

Almost all the markets and streets became overcrowded with people throwing the social distancing norm to the wind. The markets saw sudden rush with people making beeline for grocery and vegetables.

It is suspected that the shops dealing with rice, dal, and oil are likely to go out of stock in the evening as people are buying in bulk.
