Cyclone Yaas Damage In Odisha Pegged At Rs 610 Cr

Bhubaneswar: In a bid to assess the impact of Cyclone Yaas, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday chaired a review meeting with the administrative officials of the state. The meeting was held via video conferencing.

After reviewing the post-cyclone situation in the state, Patnaik asked the concerned authorities to document various measures which were taken during the restoration work and also advised them to make a note of the issues related to damage caused by the cyclone.

“Several departments and district administrations have performed a remarkable task during the cyclone. Restoration work has also been completed in a very short span of time post-cyclone,” CM said in the meeting.

“Documenting the pre-cyclone preparation, evacuation, and subsequent restoration work after the cyclone landfall will help us in the management of future natural calamities,” he said.

Meanwhile, Chief Secretary Suresh Chandra Mohapatra briefed the report on the damages caused by cyclones in the state.

“A total of 150 villages were submerged and several hectares of crops have been damaged in the state by cyclone Yaas. Around 1,000 DG sets and PVC tanks were deployed to provide electricity and drinking water to the people. The Public Health Engineering Department has supplied piped and packaged drinking water in the cyclone-hit villages,” Mohapatra said.

“Around 60 lakh people of 11,000 villages were affected. The cyclone also damaged government infrastructure worth Rs 520 crore and personal assets worth Rs 90 crore. The total loss is Rs 610 crore and more Rs 66 crore is required for further restoration and relief works,” he said.

While other departments of the state government also submitted their reports regarding the damages caused by the cyclone, the affected district collectors also submitted there post- cyclone reports.

Earlier, Patnaik also announced seven-day relief for all families of marooned villages in the cyclone-affected districts. The chief minister has also directed 80 per cent restoration of electricity supply and clearing of major roads in affected districts in the next 24 hours.
