Cuttack Road Rage: Arrested Youth Leader Sent To 14-Day Judicial Custody

Cuttack: Secretary of the Biju Yuva Janata Dal (BYJD) Amarendra Pratap Swain (34) alias Vicky, who was arrested for beating and kneeling down a youth on a busy street in Cuttack, has been sent to 14-day judicial custody after his bail plea was rejected on Sunday.

Accused Vicky, who happens to be the nephew of Odisha’s Agriculture Minister and senior Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader Ranendra Pratap Swain, was arrested after a video clip, showing him punishing the youth went viral on social media.

The incident took place in Pratap Nagari locality in Cuttack city on Thursday evening over a road rage incident.

Based on an FIR, Sadar police station registered a case and investigated the incident. Among the accused involved in the incident, the main accused Vicky was arrested and today he has been produced before the court and sent to jail. The other accused are still absconding, said IIC Rashmiranjan Mohapatra.

As many as eight cases are still pending against accused Vicky in Cuttack, the police said.

According to reports, two cars brushed against each other in the Pratap Nagari area on the outskirts of Cuttack town while the driver of one of the vehicles was trying to overtake the other. Following this, at least 10 people got down from three cars and picked up a fight with the driver of the car that reportedly brushed off against one of the cars. The miscreants not only thrashed the victim but also forced him to kneel down on the road.

A local, identified as Nirmal Swain, who tried to intervene and rescue the victim driver, but they didn’t even spare him. He too was assaulted by the group. He subsequently reached the Cuttack Sadar police station and lodged an FIR in this regard. Based on the complaint, police lodged a case and verified the CCTV footage.
