Crorepati PEO Arrested By Vigilance In Odisha’s Sambalpur

Sambalpur:  Vigilance sleuths on Tuesday arrested Panchayat Executive Officer (PEO) of Jhankarpali Gram Panchayat under Jujumura Block in Sambalpur district for possession of disproportionate assets to the tune of more than Rs 1 Crore.

According to the Vigilance, on the strength of Search Warrants issued by the Hon’ble Court of Special Judge, Vigilance, Sambalpur against Achyutananda Khuntia, PEO of Jhankarpali GP, simultaneous house searches were conducted at four places on 6th December, 2021 by four teams of Odisha Vigilance led by two DSsP, three Inspectors, two ASIs and other staff.

Following assessment of the raided properties, the accused PEO, Achyutananda Khuntia, was found in possession of disproportionate assets, which he could not account for satisfactorily.

“One double-storey building at Kuchinda Maulibandhapada, one single ACC sheet building at Subarnapali, three stall at Subarnapali, two plots at Kuchinda and Sankarma in Sambalpur district, one two-wheeler, Insurance deposits of over Rs.10.43 Lakh, Bank deposits of over Rs.1.15 Lakh and other movable and immovable properties, all totalling to over Rs 1.12 Crore were unearthed during the house search,” the Vigilance Directorate said.

After thorough search, inventory and further enquiry, the income, expenditure and assets of Khuntia, were calculated and he was found in possession of assets disproportionate to the known sources of income to the tune of 215% of his known sources of income, the Vigilance added.

Sambalpur Vigilance Police Station has registered a Case No.44/2021 against Achyutananda Khuntia and his spouse U/s 13(2) r/w 13(1)(b)/12 Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act-2018. In course of investigation, Khuntia was arrested on 6th Dec, 2021.

Reportedly, the Court of Special Judge, Vigilance, Sambalpur has remanded the accused to judicial custody till 18th Dec, 2021.
