Crime surged during coronavirus lockdown: Minister Dibya Shankar Mishra

Bhubaneswar: Minister of State for Home Dibya Shankar Mishra told the State Assembly on Monday that  1,13,410 cases were registered during Covid from March 2020 to December.

Mishra said a total of 51,617 persons were rounded up during the period. Besides, 16370 cases were registered and 5915 persons arrested this year till February 11.

Replying to a questioned by MLA Mohan Majhi, the Minister said Rs 48,49,48,370 were collected as penalty for violation of coronavirus guidelines during the 10 months. He admitted that cybercrime has increased but said that the police are ready to tackle the situation.

Replying to the question of Congress MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati, Mishra said there is a need for undertaking awareness campaigns among public and added that advisories were uploaded for public on the Crime Branch website www.odishapolicecbcid.gov.in.

The Minister said 4273 cybercrime cases were registered in three years, i.e 2018, 2019 and 2020. There are 1319 cases related to crime against women and 2704 are financial fraud, he added.

To a question posed by MLA Soumya Ranjan Patnaik, the Minister said a total of 974 were arrested in connection with the cases and a person was convicted by court.
