Geneva: The World Health Organization said the Covid-19 pandemic might not end this year. Its emergency director Michael Ryan said hospitalisations and deaths could be reduced.

Ryan told reporters that it is premature as well as unrealistic to think that coronavirus will be finished by the end of the year. WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said new case numbers rose last week in Europe, the Americas, southeast Asia and the eastern Mediterranean.

He said coronavirus vaccines will certainly help to save lives, but depending solely on vaccines will not do. The basic public health measures matters most, he added.

Tedros lamented that lower income countries are being vaccinated three months after the wealthiest countries started their vaccination campaigns.
