Beijing: The death toll from the coronavirus known as Covid-19 in mainland China has risen to 1,665.
More than 68,000 people have now been infected in China from a virus that emerged in central Hubei province in December before spreading across the country and some two dozen countries.
According to the national health commission, there were 2,009 new cases reported across the country – the third day of declining cases after a spike earlier in the week due to a change in the way cases were counted.
There were 1,843 fresh cases in hard-hit Hubei province, where the outbreak first emerged in December and spiralled into a nationwide epidemic. Most of the deaths have been in Hubei.
