Bolangir: Tension flared up in Bolangir district after a constable of the Town police station was thrashed by locals for allegedly forcing a widowed woman to sell her land to a person.
The accused constable has been identified as Anjan Pradhan.
According to sources, the police constable, who acted as a middleman in the land deal, forced the woman of Gandhinagarpada area to sign on the property papers by threatening her.
When the woman refused to sign the documents and attempted to leave the spot, the accused constable used tractive force to make her stay on the spot.
Hearing the woman’s screams, locals rushed to the spot and rescued her. After listening to the victim’s ordeal, the locals thrashed the constable black and blue for misusing his power.
Later, a complaint was lodged against the constable and the prospective buyer. As per the complaint, the accused constable detained five persons including the woman’s minor sons. Following this, the woman went to the police station to free her sons.
However, in a bid to take advantage of the situation, the constable schemed to make the woman sign on her property documents. When the woman disagreed the accused allegedly assaulted her, her elder sister and father in order to make the widowed woman sign the No Objection Certificate.
Meanwhile, the accused constable has refuted all the allegations claiming it to be fabricated and baseless, sources said.
