Congress Demands Postponement Of Pipili Bypoll Amid COVID-19 Surge

Bhubaneswar: The Congress party has urged the Chief Electoral Officer to postpone the ensuing Pipili Bypoll in view of surging cases of deadly COVID-19 in Odisha.

Odisha PCC Working President Pradip Majhi told a press conference here on Tuesday that they are in favour of election but not at the cost of peoples’ lives. He said Congress has lost his candidate in Corona and added that the time has come to think about life and security.

The result of the by-poll will never change the government, Majhi added.

The BJD MLA Debi Mishra said Majhi’s statement contradicts what another leader of Congress party Suresh Routray says. They must sit together to decide what they want to do, Mishra said.

The BJP on the other hand advised the election commission to conduct the poll in accordance with Covid guidelines. Prithiviraj Harichandan said there is no veracity in his contention and added that the poll body has already announced the notification and the democratic process must continue.
