Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Forest Department has announced the reopening of the Habalikhati Nature Camp for online bookings, despite the recent damage caused by Cyclone Dana.
The decision has sparked concerns over the safety of tourists, as the cyclone’s impact has left several structures weakened.
Cyclone Dana, which made landfall near the Habalikhati Nature Camp in Kendrapara district, brought with it powerful winds and heavy rains, causing significant damage to the area. Although the dense mangrove forests provided some protection, the storm uprooted numerous trees and weakened the infrastructure.
Local authorities have assured that safety measures are being put in place to ensure the well-being of visitors. “We are conducting thorough inspections and necessary repairs to ensure that the cottages are safe for occupancy,” said a spokesperson from the Forest Department. However, environmentalists and safety experts have raised concerns about the potential risks to tourists, urging the department to prioritize safety over reopening.
The Habalikhati Nature Camp, known for its serene environment and rich biodiversity, attracts numerous visitors each year. The reopening aims to revive tourism in the region, but the safety of tourists remains a pressing issue. As the Forest Department moves forward with bookings, it remains to be seen how effectively they can address the safety concerns raised by experts and the public.
