Bhubaneswar: In a bid to check women safety, the Commissionerate Police today launched a women Special Police Officers (SPOs) unit.
On the occasion of the 12th Foundation Day celebrations of Commissionerate Police, Commissioner Sudhansu Sarangi inducted 250 women as SPOs. The SPOs were also presented uniforms and their identity cards.
Speaking at the event, Sarangi said, the women SPOs would have all the powers that of police personnel. They can even arrest miscreants if required.
Moreover, the Commissioner informed that the women SPOs have now been appointed for three months. Later, their tenures would be extended.
It is pertinent to mention here that on December 16, letters were written to 48 educational institutions and other organisations across the state to select candidates for the post of SPOs. The SPOs would serve the police on an honorary basis.
